The school teaches Phonics in a daily session in Reception and Key Stage 1 classes. Lessons are based on the Department for Education's 'Letters & Sounds' materials and additional resources are used including 'Phonics Play', 'Phonics Bug' and 'Big Cat Phonics' to provide learning opportunities.
Children who require additional support with phonics in Year 2, receive this as part of their English lesson.
The school uses a range of schemes, in ability colour banded levels, to teach reading at Key Stage 1 including:
The school uses the Guided Reading approach to teach specific reading skills in a group as well as an adults reading with individual children.
Reading Eggs
The 'Reading eggs' resource reinforces the school's method of teaching reading through phonics. The program allows children to work through different maps collecting eggs which the children can use to buy items for their avatar. Each of the different maps works through a number of interactive phonic lessons and games which really motivate children to learn. We offer reading eggs, as an activity to use at home, to children in Reception, Years 1 and 2.
